As Joseph Pilates stated in ‘Return to Life Through Contrology’, breathing is ‘first act of life, and the last’ . It is a fundamental principle in Pilates but often neglected by people including myself once we are outside of the class. That was until I read ‘The Breathing Book’ by Donna Farhi.
Most of us clean our teeth daily but surely your nasal passage is even more important with it giving you the supply of life; air. ‘You can irrigate your nasal passages to protect yourself from sinusitis, colds, flu, and allergies’ . Sounded good to me so I went out and bought myself a neti pot and some Himalayan Salts.
Well, I am now HOOKED!!! Neti pots are often associated with yogic practices, but I cannot believe with the importance of breath in Pilates that it has not been recommended to me before. I’m on day two and the difference is incredible. I didn’t think my nose was blocked, but clearly a lot has suddenly been shifted (I won’t go into graphic details). My breath feels a lot fuller which will not only help give me more oxygen but also help massage internal organs including the heart with my diaphragm; win, win, win! I also noticed last night in Yin Yoga (sssshhhhh don’t tell anyone) that my breath was so much smoother and flowing. I won’t lie…the experience of water running through my nasal passage felt very strange to start with. Oh, and you quickly learn to breathe through your mouth whilst doing it. But the benefits already feel well worth getting used to these things.
It’s safe to say that this is now going to be done daily. The pots and salts are cheap and easy to buy and I cannot recommend highly enough giving this a go. Let me know how you get on and if you’ll now be doing it daily too 🙂
