Guru Dakshina- Classes on donation basis

I’m so excited to say that from February 1st I will be running Pilates classes on a donation basis known as ‘Guru Dakshina’. This means group classes will start from £4 and one-to-ones from £20.

What is Guru Dakshina?

I am not talking about the film of the same name here. Wikipedia defines it as ‘a Vedic concept of donation or payment for the services of a priest, spiritual guide or teacher.’ It was a way to thank the guru or teacher in Indian culture, usually by way of some ‘monetary benefit’, but it could also be by some form of work for the teacher. I love the idea of this instead of set prices…and I’m definitely not saying I’m a guru I must add!

I believe that Pilates can benefit EVERYONE and so really want to make it accessible to as many people as possible. It’s an exercise system that changed my life and I would love to be able to change as many other lives as I possibly can. Sadly, not everyone can always afford to attend a class or get the one-to-one that could be a great blessing to them, but hopefully now they can! At the same time there may be people that it is just ‘pocket change’ to and could easily pay more, thereby effectively donating towards those in a ‘lesser’ financial position, enabling them to reap the rewards of Pilates.

I feel exceptionally privileged to have gained the information that I have. Yes, it took a lot of hard work (which is now continual) and also money, but I believe if you have knowledge of something, then sharing it is of great importance.

Additionally it gives clients an opportunity to pay what they feel the class warrants. Some may take more from a class than others and therefore people can pay according to what they get out of it.

What it means

Group classes will be £4-£15 and one-to-ones £20-£60. As client well-being is of upmost importance in Pilates, class size will still be limited to a maximum of 12 people so that you can get the attention necessary. I believe in the honesty of people and so expect people will be genuine in their donations. You could pay more one week , knowing that later in the month you will have no pennies left and so pay less then. I will also consider exchanges of services (such as other classes, products, work done etc…nothing rude please!) which we can discuss before a class or via email. I will have a little tin left at the end of class so that donations are kept anonymous. Classes are posted on the Facebook page here and you can find out more details here. Or if you are interested in getting bespoke Pilates to suit your needs there are details on one-to-one here.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please get in touch with me, and I look forward to meeting you all.
